Brazilian Percussion Workshop

Xande Cruz

Bring your drum and learn the magical rhythms of Brazil. We will be playing rhythms from different parts of Brazil. All ages, all leves. Some instruments provided.

Xande was born and raised in São Paulo, an urban metropolis, the heart of industrial Brazil. From his parents, natives of Pernambuco and Bahia in the northern countryside, Xande inherited the traditions of the native and afro Brazilian cultures. His music carries all these influences creating a sound that is contemporary, while rooted in his ancestral culture.

Xande was also exposed to a variety of songwriters, singer and instrumentalists. From Ray Charles to Roberto Carlos from Ella Fitzgerald to Charles Aznavour.

The 80’s was also the end of a 20 year dictatorship era in Brazil. His teenage years were fueled with hope, possibilities, optimism and ideas of freedom which you can still hear in his songs today. His influences include the electronic music of 80’s Europe to American pop, from Ska to capoeira percussion, whatever makes you dance, anything that opens the mind and the heart, is material for his lyrics and sound.
